Austrian Stabs-Dragoner

The Austrian Staff Dragoons were raised at the same time as the infantry, in 1758. They guarded the generals, the staff and the places of detention like the infantry but also provided "escorts for convoys, reconnaissance parties and the like" (Duffy, AMT). Detachments of the regiment saw distinguished service at Maxen. The unit was disbanded in 1763.

Uniform: Black tricorne, black cockade, yellow metal button. Black stock. Dark blue coat, red cuffs, collar tabs and shoulder strap, white turnbacks, yellow metal buttons. Dark blue waistcoat, red breeches, white inner stockings, black cavalry boots.

Shabraque red with blue and white edging lace.

  1. Hello there David,

Hope the New Year is treating you well. Do you know what the facing and turnback colors were for the artillery contingent of Frei-corps von Kleist? I've checked my Osprey titles and, while they show red, light blue, and light green for various infantry and cavalry contingents, no information is provided for artillery uniforms. Any thoughts?

    Best Regards,

    Stokes

  2. Hi Stokes,

OK thanks - though I must say I do dislike dark, dismal, grey, damp, cold January! ;-) We really should go back to the New Year starting at the end of March! Hope your New Year has been good.

I've put a picture for you of the Von Kleist artillery uniforms on my webspace at: http://www.woodward.toucansurf.com/SYW/Von%20Kleist%20artillery.jpg

    All the best,

  4. Thank you very much David! It's a very pretty uniform, and I'll probably use it as the basis for another 13 artillery crew in the near future.

    Best Regards,

    Stokes

  5. Hi Stokes,

I'm glad that was useful. :-) Von Kleist's FreiCorps certainly had a goodly array of interesting uniforms; I'm going to do their uhlans at some point.

Look forward to seeing the figures.

    All the best,

    David.
