Minden French Flags Project - Regiment Aquitaine

Incorporated in the French army in 1625, although traditionally dating from 1604, this regiment was named Anjou in honour of the Duke d'Anjou in 1671 and then renamed Aquitaine in 1753. This was a two battalion regiment and gave its name to the brigade which also included the two battalion Vastan Regiment. The regiment was at Hastenbeck, the expedition against Zell (Celle), Krefeld, Minden, Sachsenhausen, Vellinghausen and Wilhelmstahl. At Minden it was in the first line of Guerchy's Division of left wing infantry and along with Auvergne distinguished itself.

The flags were as depicted from 1753 to 1772.

And this plate shows the uniform and flags in 1757 (with the blue on the Ordonnance flag shown much lighter than is generally the case):

  1. Thanks, Ray. :-) Yes, it's a fairly complicated one - similar to that of the Dauphin's Regiment which will be coming along sometime soon, I hope.

    Cheers,

    David.

  6. Great project David, I have shared with many gaming friends. I hope you are to find time to make the Dauphin infantrie flag, as it's a regiment involved in many battles. And one of the regiments I have painted up in 28mm for my Louis XV army. It's not an easy one to paint!

  7. Hi John,

Glad you like the flags; thanks, and for sharing with your friends. :-)

Yes, Dauphin's attractive and complex flag is still "on the stocks", waiting to be finished. Until I found an image of an original from the WSS held in the Armeria Reale in Turin I had no definitive picture of it and other depictions of it varied fairly widely, especially in the edge pattern and number of blocks in that pattern. I just need to find the time and energy to complete it now but I hope it will not be too long!

    Cheers,

    David.
