Absolutely the last French militia flag for now. I could not resist this one either; I'm just having too much fun, with fancy flags and no complicated text to write! It's like a graphic artist's holiday. Ha ha.

Very nice!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ray. :-) It does have a rather good ImagiNations look about it!
DeleteAll the best,
David.
Another really lovely flag there David. Personally I'd love to see more of these as they are perfect for ImagiNations armies!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Steve. :-) I agree; it's not always easy to find authentic flags that have such an ImagiNations look to them, though! If you know of others from the period that you think would do the job, do let me know, please.
DeleteAll the best,
David.
Wonderful flag David, you are on a roll.
ReplyDeleteWillz.
Thanks, Willz. :-)
DeleteAll the best,
David.
Another nice addition, David!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jon. :-) These militia flags were not part of "The Plan" but came out pretty well anyway...
DeleteAll the best,
David.
Did French Militia also carry a White Flag?
ReplyDeletePierre Charrié in his authoritative book Drapeau Et Étendards Du Roi discusses the militia flags. There were four types of militia. 1) Royal Militia; little detailed information survives but one instance is known (Thorigny 1706) where the regiment had a colonel's flag white with coat of arms in the centre and a coloured ordonnance flag 2) Regional Militia; again, little information survives but what does suggests little conformity to any rule. The Dunkirk militia carried 21 flags of which one was white 3) Coastguard Militia; limited information again but the most numerous, the Normandy CG Militia, were reported to have a white and a blue and white flag for each sub-unit 4) Bourgeois Militia; Again, very little detail is known. Some had white colonel's flags, others not. Where a white colonel's flag was carried, it seems that the arms of the town were sometimes placed in the centre of the cross.
DeleteWith the paucity of information, it seems to me that you are fairly free to do whatever you wish when raising French militia units!
Cheers,
David.
