These standards carry the cipher of King Christian V, who ruled Denmark 1670-1699. It is known that standards with his cipher were carried well into the reign of his successor Frederick IV. The cloth is damask.

Another elegant Danish flag:). Interesting to note they were carried into the next King's reign, presumably as you couldn't just produced a new one quickly.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Steve. :-) Cavalry standards were usually of very high quality (and cost) so no doubt there wasn't much incentive to retire them if they continued to be in good condition. Presumably units became proud of them, too, and would not particularly wish to change them!
