Experimental French cavalry standards - Bourbon and Bourbon-Busset

By way of experiment, I've done versions of the SYW standards of French cavalry regiments Bourbon and Bourbon-Busset. As this is a tentative posting I will not spend lots of time writing up the regimental histories or drawing the uniforms at the moment.

I say this is an experiment, as cavalry standards are often extremely detailed and yet the final product will be printed very small and so much of the laboriously created detail is likely to be lost in the printing, even on decent paper laser printed. These standards I have created have a fair amount of detail but I have tried to produce something that, when printed small, will still look good. As I don't have a laser printer (or even a working really good quality inkjet) at the moment, to produce decent printed versions, I'd be grateful if someone who does might be able to have a go at printing these and send me photographs. Thanks!

  1. That standard for Bourbon cavalry looks perfect to me and very interesting too - better than other versions.

    1. Thank you, André. :--) Good of you to say so; I confess I am quite pleased with how they came out. It will be good to see them in action some time too!

      All the best,

  4. Cracking work there David! A good point about the detail showing up, which I know is often an issue with my 10mm flags. Fine for 28mm figures, but less so for the smaller scales. Sadly I no longer have access to the wonderful laser printer where I used to work, as that did produce pretty good fine detail, even for 10mm flags and standards.

    1. Thanks, Steve. :-) Yes, laser printing is undoubtedly the best way to make sure the finest details shows, although the better inkjets can also do a pretty good job too. What do you use now for printing your flags?

      All the best,

      David.

  6. Thanks, Ray. :-) More French cavalry standards eventually - my head buzzes a bit sometimes with how many different flags I still have to do. At this rate I shall have to live to 200 at least...

    All the best,

    David.

  7. Brilliant flags David but I especially love the vivid colours of these. Look out for some photos of Willz armies at Kenilworth on my blog in a couple of weeks

  8. Bourbon cavalerie hassuch a flamboyant flag. I used a wrong standard because I didn't had the reverse side.

    1. Thank you, André. :-) I was pleased that these standards look pretty good when printed out and used, despite the small size. For me it was both good and bad news; bad as it means I have to do mroe cavalry standards and cannot say they do not look good for all the work involved... ;-)

      All the best,

      David.
