Colours of the English 2nd or Coldstream Guards 1684

To keep things ticking over here is a relatively simple set of flags, the colours of the 2nd or Coldstream Guards in 1684 (but which may also have been carried through the 1670s):

Kronoskaf's WSS site has a detailed account of the regiment here: https://kronoskaf.com/wss/index.php?title=2nd_Foot_Guards saving me the effort! The colours changed often over the next twenty years so these are suitable only for a short period...

  1. Plain, but no less handsome for that.

    Kind Regards,

    1. Thank you, Stokes. :-) I do agree; not all flags can be crazily complex and varied, anyway, and without the plainer flags the more complex ones would not stand out! (And I can do the plainer flags far more easily so that's a win for me too... ;-))

      All the best,

      David.

  2. Might be a simple set of flags but they are a lovely set and one of the most iconic British regiments too!

    1. Thank you, Donnie. :-) Certainly, in heraldic terms, plainer usually means older and more distinguished, as with the 17th-18th century French infantry flags, for instance, or English mediaeval heraldry.

      All the best,

      David.

    1. It's the same for me and many blogs too, Willz. Very odd and very frustrating at times...

      All the best,

      David.

    1. Thank you, Ray. :-) The frequent changes of English flags in the late 17th and early 18th century can be very frustrating, though!

      All the best,

      David.

  6. Very nice work David and a sort of transitional in terms of the design, as the Major's flag has strong echoes of the ECW designs. Not surprising maybe given it's not long after the ECW finished.

    1. Thank you, Steve. Yes, indeed, it was a very transitional period for flags in many other countries too with a trend towards much simpler and more uniform designs - that makes flag creation both easier and rather more boring! ;-)

      All the best,

      David.
