Flag of yet another unknown Austrian regiment of Charles VI, as carried in the 1740s by the army of Maria Theresa

Here's another Austrian flag from the Triomphes de Louis XV MS; how lucky we are that the French captured so many from the Austrians in the 1740s! If they had not we would know so much less...

I have added my speculative but quite plausible Leibfahne, as people seem to like having them.

I still have several left of the MS flags to recreate and they are mostly very complex flags.

  1. I have seen both flags before. Nicely done, David. My only question is on the white field flag's (Leibfahne)"ghost flames". To satisfy my curiosity, can you share your source for that one? I really like your work!

    1. Thanks, TA. It is a speculative flag but I base the "ghost flames" on the "ghost stripes" shown on the WSS flags of the Leibfahne of Regiment Salm in Kühn and Hall's Imperial Regiments of Foot 1701-1714 Part 21. Little evidence of flags of the period seems to survive showing both Leibfahnen and Regimenterfahnen of the same regiment so I accept it is a bit tenuous.

      Cheers,

      David.

    1. Thanks, Steve. :-) Given all the work involved in those flame patterns, I'm glad the flags look impressive!

      All the best,

      David.

    1. Thanks, Ray! :-) More to come soon; just disentangling all the heraldry - quite a chore...

  5. Thanks for producing these David, it's a shame the Austrians went more bland with their flags after this war!

    1. Thanks, Lee. Yes, I agree - it is a great pity that from the mid-18th century the Austrians and others simplified these things. Obviously, it was far better for them - but much more boring for wargamers! ;-)

      All the best,

      David.

  6. David, thank you for creating these Austrian flags. I plan on using them for my War of Austrian Succession Austrian war game army.

    1. Thanks, Jim. Very much look forward to seeing them in action with your troops! I'm still working on the last of the Austrian WAS flags from the Louis XV MS as they are largely very complex heraldic designs so they are much more labour-intensive to create than the previous ones, especially as many of the heraldic elements are not very clear on the MS.

      All the best,

      David.

  7. Finally excellent old Austrian flags. I prefer the style of the WAS uniforms too. Thank you for your work!

    1. Thank you, André. :-) Yes, I do agree about the WAS uniforms. The armies and their effectiveness (or lack of it) had certainly shifted greatly by the SYW, though. I still have mroe of the WAS Austrian flags under way; as always it's time and energy that slow things down.

      All the best,

      David.
