Portuguese Infantry Flags of the 18th Century - Batch 2

Here are the next two flags, again early 18th century but probably used later;

The first one has the arms of the House of Braganza, like the Aramada Tercio flag of the first batch. It has crossed sceptre and sword. The rather obscure motto in the scroll "Ius Dedit Et Dabit Uit" means something like "The law gave and will give [?life - assuming uit is actually Latin vit (for vitam)]. Green and white were the colours of the Portuguese ruling House of Braganza.

The blue and white flag is possibly that of the Regiment of Lisbon, whose colours these were.

  2. Thanks, Jonathan. I'm so looking forward to all the Portuguese wargames figures that will be popping up soon with these flags! :-) I'm quite excited at the moment as looking very closely at a good quality scan of the 1759 Tavora execution painting (best to ignore the horrors going on on the scaffold - ugh - and concentrate on the flags and uniforms at the bottom) I've spotted what I think is a cavalry standard, which I shall also recreate and post. But it's now gone 4am here and time to get to bed!

    Cheers,

    David.

  3. Nice piece of detective work David. I'll be interested in your thoughts about a cavalry standard. Figures still inbound from North Star - I'm getting quite excited about which regiment to paint first. Cheers Greg

  6. Thanks, Greg. The cavalry standard appears to be square or oblong, and red or scarlet with an oval central cartouche with the Braganza arms in it. I gather that, from what little we know, Portuguese cavalry standards probably had the Braganza arms on one side and possibly the arms of the colonel on the other. Given the lack of evidence of the arms of any colonels I'll have to put the Braganza arms on both sides! As you'll only see it in action from one side at a time, then it won't matter too much... ;-)

    Good luck with the painting. If you want a copy of the good quality scan I have of the Tavora execution painting, which shows details of the uniforms of 2 infantry regiments (one white, one blue) and less clearly, one cavalry regiment, let me know and I can email it to you.

    Cheers,

    David.
